Our artists emphasize story and color across winter landscapes.

Erling Sjovold's Winter invokes a Northern Renaissance landscape, minus the hunters. In their place is a view of bare trees and snow-blanketed roofs descending into a valley. Sjovold's delicate details invite you to explore the entire tableau. 

Robert Abbott's unrefined paint strokes share the immediacy of his plein air process. Long shadows extend across a pasture of snow. Scraggly lines and shapes define the mountain ridges. Simple dots portrays a line of cows. Evading details, he helps us experience a cold day painting in Taos.

Blue sky in Susan Petty's A Day After Snowfall repeats across the canvas to create shadows that give form to the slope. Petty animates bare shrubs with wigs of snow, their limbs poking out from the bank—creatures out celebrating a snow day.

A replete Lake Cachuma prompted Patricia Doyle's mirrored abstraction of the reservoir's banks. Horizontal and diagonal strokes break up columnar vertical stripes. Doyle's visual play summons musical rhythms and beats across the paintings.

Marilee Krause embraces winter's minimalism. The cold front materializes from a few washes with only a slim gap separating the impending clouds from fully engulfing the stark ridge.

Oxidized green trees emerge from a coppery field, glowing; their limbs flail above. Tipton has conjured ghosts haunting an Art Nouveau orchard.

Marcia Burtt's Winter Vineyard is a spectacle of green. Below a slip of blue sky and mountains, bright greens spread over the canvas. Bare canes rise, an ecstatic chorus praising the season's rain—Burtt's plein air testimony to a California winter after rain.
