Casting Light

Erling Sjovold, Looking Across Sycamore Canyon, oil, 12x9 in.

October 28 through November 27, 2022

Dramatic lighting streams through the artworks in this group exhibition. Using chiaroscuro and Romantic atmospheric effects, our artists accentuate light falling on both landscape views and urban facades.

Light and shade splinter both structural concrete and natural landscapes into abstract forms. Contrast pulls the viewer from sunlight into shadow to discover unexpected colors.

Silhouettes cast by objects outside the image expand each artwork’s story beyond its frame.

Glittering light bouncing off faceted water intensifies cast light along the shore.

Backlit clouds diffuse the sun’s early light as well as the golden radiance before sundown; yellows and golds throw a warm visual cloak over both morning and late afternoon scenes.
