FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The bold and imaginative paintings of Meg Torbert will be shown in a retrospective exhibition at Marcia Burtt Studio from August 11 through September 23. The work spans a period of 27 years and includes painterly landscapes, abstractions and non-objective paintings. Many pieces are flower paintings of great verve and power. Torbert, 94, began painting after retiring from a long career as a designer, editor and curator, spending many years at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis where she curated exhibitions featuring some of the most respected artists and designers of the 20th century. Beginning in Robert Frame's class at Santa Barbara City College in 1980, Torbert's work progressed rapidly and soon caught the attention of Elizabeth Fortner, whose famed crafts gallery until that time had never shown paintings. She exhibited with Elizabeth Fortner Gallery until its closing in the nineties; since then she has had several major exhibitions at Lacuna Gallery. A 64-page retrospective catalog will be released at the reception for the artist on Friday, August 10, from 5:00 to 8:00. |
