An exhibition of photographs by Bill Dewey will open Saturday, June 2, at Marcia Burtt Studio, 517 Laguna, Santa Barbara. Bill has captured both the moment just before breaking, when the wave is perfect in its quiet smooth form, and the chaos and crash of white water in this astonishingly varied series of photographs. “These images have their origin in my summers growing up on Southern California beaches and my passion for bodysurfing. Sharing the energy of a wave in a magical union was the joy of my life in those simpler days. “Breaking waves still fascinate me—the contrast of the moment just before breaking, when the wave is perfect in its quiet smooth form, with the next instant, the chaos and crash of white water, when all the energy that started thousands of miles out in the Pacific Ocean, augmented by sun, moon, storms, wind and tides, is released as it surges to the shore—that incredible instant is what I have tried to capture in these photographs.” The exhibit continues through July 15, 2007. |
